Crossroads
Arriving in Kathmandu is an exciting and impressive experience. At the same time, colors, sounds and smells can quickly overwhelm the senses. Kathmandu is home to one million locals plus a constant influx of western travelers for the past fifty years. Capital of the state of Nepal, geographically located between India and China, the city of Kathmandu was established as a center of commerce linking Lhasa to India, and as a consequence is a bridge between different cultures. It is the city where Hinduism and Buddhism are living in a surprisingly authentic way. Discovered by the travelers in the 60’s as a place with a strong symbolic and spiritual value, today Kathmandu shows all the social issues of the great urban agglomerations of developing countries - prostitution, street children, illiteracy - with a modernity characterized by construction in cement and oppressive pollution.
